Hey comic fans! Like many excited members of fandom, we spent the weekend of March 18-20 at Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2).
We went as spectators this year, ready to soak up some serious nerdiness, and took in as many cool panels as schedule allowed.
We chronicled our (pretty tame) adventures on our website via this very post, updating throughout the weekend. We were also tweeting away over at twitter.com/loopandhoodie (follow us!). You can friend us on Facebook, too.
Friday 3:30pm
After a little bit of trouble finding our hotel, the L&H trio is checked in and at C2E2! Right now, Dan is at the Marvel panel, while Travis and Adron are at the Epic (Writers) Journey panel. Have already run into Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt, talked to Jason Howard for a minute, and seen some past Artist Alley favorites from past cons.
The con looks great – very big, nicely laid out, lots of space to walk around. Haven’t had more than a few minutes to walk around, but very excited!
Saturday 11:50am
Keeping up with the tweeting and blogging is difficult! WiFi is spotty at the convention, and our AT&T 3G has been sketchy at best…
All 3 of us are currently at a panel called “Writing Comics in the Digital Age”. Pretty full crowd – as always, cons are full of folks like us that would love to get involved in the industry in some way (outside of just being consumers).
We had a good dinner last night around the corner from our hotel, but were wore out and skipped going out for nerd after partying. Hopefully tonight we’ll get out and be social.
Saturday 3:05pm
In the Archaia indie comics discussion panel. Good speakers from a company focused on published long form graphic novels, as opposed to 22 page monthly comics.
Before the panel, we had lunch with Daniel from the Paranormal State crew (an AE show). Really cool guy. Was cool to pick his brain about being on a successful TV show while still holding down a full time job and doing convention appearances.
Sunday 1:25pm
Last day of C2E2 2011. Seriously dragging hindquarters. It’s been a ton of fun, but definitely feeling “con fatigue”. The “Myth of the Starving Artist” panel is about to begin. Hope it’s engaging or it might be sleepy time.
Had a really fun dinner last night at PJ Clarke’s next to our hotel. They had paper on the tables. We had pencils. They gave us crayons. So we got comic-y on the table. Will post pics soon, but we decorated the table with Batman, Spider-Man, Green Lantern and even Garfield & Odie. We drew a lot of eyes and attention in the restaurant. Our very sweet waitress, Bree, turned out to be a comics fan herself (she’s a Vertigo girl, particularly of Fables and Preacher.
We hit up the Comic Book Resources party at the Hyatt Bar later in the evening. Had some very expensive drinks, hung out for a bit, but didn’t stick around long. $10 cocktails lose their luster after awhile. Went back to the hotel and did some sketching.
Back to today – it’s Kids day at the con, so there’s tons of adorable children running around in costumes. Saw one little guy wearing the expandable Batman wings know around the interwebz from a viral YouTube video (when a 5 year old pops his wings and yells “Boo-yah!”). Awesome.
Sunday 3:30pm
After a little last minute shopping, and a nice chat with the folks with Archaia, we hit the road. It was a fun time, Chicago, but back to St. Louis we go!
Sunday 5:40pm
Finding a decent place to eat on the way home – a bit challenging. We tried to be good, but ended up at McDonald’s anyway…
Sunday 6:30pm
To keep the energy alive, Mr. Cassity played iPod DJ on the ride home. So it was obscure 80′s soundtrack songs, current pop dance hits and novelty tracks (Hamster Dance!). Good times!
Sunday 10:00pm
Everyone is dropped off and home safe. Sorry to see the weekend go, but happy to be home with our families. See you at the next con!
